How would you explain your job to someone who doesn’t know VFX?

Tracking and Layout creates a foundation for CG and compositing work to look like it belongs in the scene and appear as if it was there during filming.  For example, without a proper camera track, a New York City set extension with CG buildings in the background would not move across the frame with proper motion and parallax as the real buildings from the shooting location. My team and I recreate what happens on-set during filming in 3D, tracking camera movements, characters, props, and build environments so other departments can add realistic visual effects that seamlessly match what was captured on camera.

What does a day in the life look like?

As a department lead, I work closely with other leadership on each project. We meet to discuss the overall needs and VFX of a project and how we can set them up for success. Then, I guide my team in delivering the highest quality tracks and layouts by ensuring they have all the information and time they need and we assist in problem solving any issues that arise. When I have time, I enjoy working on shots myself - I'm always looking for new tips and tricks to share with the team.

What are some of your favorite projects? Why?

My very 1st project at Ingenuity was a Spotify commercial. I was the entire Tracking department, and in all honesty: was terrified! With incredible support from everyone at the company the project was a complete success and will always hold a special place in my heart for this wonderful team of artist and leaders here.

What's something you wish people knew about what you do?

As software advances, and more is automated, it's incredible how we are able to work faster and more efficiently, however nothing will be able to replace the talent of a human artist who knows whether something looks correct or when it doesn't, knows how to fix it.

What is something that excites you about your career?

In the past few years, I've watched the industry change from all in-person work to fully remote work, and now hybrid. This is allowing our teams to not only grow outside of the immediate "Hollywood" communities but worldwide, all while still maintaining a positive company culture! I'm excited to continue to grow and build a truly international worldwide team that functions as one. I feel the diversity of cultures and backgrounds allows for a higher level of creative and problem solving.

Are you learning anything new?

Recently I started learning and playing Pickleball with some new neighborhood friends!

What do you like to do outside of work?

I'm a huge fan of the outdoors and spending time with my dog. I love to spend my weekends backpacking, paragliding or snowboarding in the mountains or exploring desert canyons.

What's the best advice you've ever received?

Never be the smartest person in the room. If you are, you are in the wrong room!
